Cornelia, Georgia: The Best Christmas Town You’ve Never Heard About
Cornelia, Georgia, sparkles like a box of polished ornaments during the holiday season. This historic town lights up with twinkling displays, a towering Christmas tree, and a big red apple that work together to deliver the comforting warmth of fresh-baked sugar cookies on a chilly night.
Cornelia doesn’t just decorate for Christmas—it transforms into a living snow globe, a picture-perfect holiday escape that belongs on every tourist itinerary.

Lights and Magic Everywhere
Cornelia ushers in the holiday season with a bold statement. In front of City Hall, a life-size nativity scene commands attention, so striking and bold that I nearly hit the brakes the first time I saw it. Its neon-bright lights set a sentimental tone, but they don’t overshadow the centerpiece of the town square: an enormous Christmas tree adorned with colorful decorations and elegant white lights. Just to its left, the town’s iconic Big Red Apple glows a brilliant scrumptious red, creating a stunning display that perfectly blends Cornelia’s rich heritage with its infectious holiday spirit.

Last year we hosted the Dashing Thru the Lights 5K, which inaugurated the Christmas Lights Spectacular, one of many 5K’s organized around holidays in this community. Runners wove through the park, surrounded by more than 100 dazzling light displays, from jumping reindeer to jolly bears.
Every year, the city park transforms into a winter wonderland as the runners pace through the winding paths by the light of thousands of bulbs and antique street lamps. At the Cornelia City Park, individuals enjoy the Magical Nights of Lights style experience free of charge throughout the entire season.
Indeed, even the Chick-fil-A of Cornelia joins in, offering a generous Christmas light display right in the drive-thru. The spirit continues inside, where the restaurant fills its space with nativities, decorated trees, a Letters to Santa box, and other touches that make the season special for the children and visitors who dine there.
Christmas in Downtown Cornelia
However it’s Cornelia’s marquee event, Christmas in Downtown Cornelia, that turns the town into a jingle junction of joy. On Saturday, December 6, from 5 to 9 PM, the streets of downtown come alive with family-friendly activities, local shopping, and the heartwarming sights and sounds of the season.

At the Historic Train Depot, Santa himself greets families for free photos. Nearby, hayrides offer an old-fashioned way to explore downtown’s glowing streets for only $2. In the past, s’mores stations fill the air with the sweet aroma of toasted marshmallows cooked by families at the open firepits.
Fender’s Alley buzzes with activity. Local musicians and performers take the stage, their live music drifting into the chilly evening air. The holiday market showcases unique, handcrafted treasures from area artisans, perfect for holiday gifts. Every corner of downtown brings vibrant energy, creating a holiday atmosphere as warm as a crackling fire.
Cornelia’s Culinary Delights
Foodies find their holiday haven in Cornelia, with a wide array of high class dining including an authentic sophisticated Italian cuisine complete with a speakeasy. At Fender’s Alley, a 1950s-styled diner, guests can enjoy cozy indoor seating or dine al fresco in heated outdoor spaces. The retro charm, warm ambiance, and hearty menu make it the perfect spot to refuel during the season’s festivities.
However, Community Brew and Tap stands out as the city’s shimmering showstopper. The renovated 1920s bank invites guests into a production that feels lifted from Guys and Dolls, complete with an ornate Marie Antoinette chandelier and a sweeping Cinderella staircase. Seasonal cocktails and gourmet steaks elevate a nostalgic night into a memorable and magical experience. You leave feeling like a Chicago bootlegger with his dame, stepping out of your own little slice of old-world glamor.
For daytime and early evening visitors, Cornelia boasts an exceptional European cafe, FarmHouse PoundCakes, which delivers a delightful fusion of Scottish cuisine and handcrafted poundcakes that will completely redefine your idea of the dense yet crispy dessert, no exaggeration. Moreover, it provides the city’s best hot chocolates and gourmet espressos created with carefully sourced, high quality ingredients and served with style.
They also host elegant Christmas events for adults and children. The 6th Annual Santa at the FarmHouse ~ Cookies with Santa offers families a quiet, comforting holiday experience that lets children enjoy the season without loud cartoon characters or bright neon lights. Children settle in with cookies and hot chocolate before meeting Santa for photos. More information, HERE.
They also host a Scottish Christmas Candlelight Tea, a warm and inviting evening that celebrates tradition and the spirit of Scotland. Guests settle into a cozy setting lit by candlelight, enjoy a full tea service, and listen to music performed by the talented Glasgow musician Connor Civette. The event is reservation-only, with more information, HERE.
