As I squinted into my rearview mirror, I found myself momentarily startled by the enormous, lime-green alien plushy filling most of the reflection—a cheeky companion for the day’s work. With a practiced flourish, I adjusted the oversized, bubblegum-pink ribbon that struggled to keep my hair in place, a necessary but absurd concession to today’s mission. This was no ordinary workday, after all. I was en route to curate an event where practicality married whimsy, starting with this unabashedly vibrant hair accessory.
The Stars Hollow Charm of Waffle’s English Tea Room
Yet, if anything describes Gilmore Girls, it’s practical whimsy—the perfect phrase to sum up today’s endeavor: a Gilmore Girls-themed tea party, co-hosted by Waffle’s English Tea Room.
This quintessentially British tea shop combines Edwardian sensibilities with a hint of Victorian flourish, providing the perfect setting for the event. Located in the idyllic town of Dahlonega, it feels like a further nod to Stars Hollow.
As I step onto the sweeping covered veranda of Waffle’s English Tea Room, a blackboard greets me, cheerfully announcing the event and immediately warming me with its thoughtful touch, a small reminder of the partnership that brought this day to life. I feel a fleeting moment of anxiety, sensing the pressure to live up to the kindness and confidence extended. Yet, in my Mary-Poppins bag—so large it takes two people to carry—I’ve packed an eclectic array of treasures: antiquarian books, a globe, a miniature Eiffel Tower, nearly fifty pumpkins, and a tube of lipstick labeled Vicious Trollop.
I pause momentarily on the porch, savoring the numerous flower arrangements, sweetheart tables, and inviting fall decor, all while resisting the Southern inclination to linger with a cup of tea.
Yet, as the clock struck 2:00 PM, Cinderella had just an hour to arrange fifty pumpkins before the festivities began. I stepped into the parlor and was greeted by the proprietor, an elegant woman clad in a rich green velvet dress. Around her neck, she wore an ornate yet friendly necklace—a cascade of silver skulls interspersed with pale green beads, lending her a touch of intrigue and elegance. She introduced herself as Fiona, and in a moment we were engaged in rapid-fire discussions and plans for the event.
As she departed for the store for more pumpkins- there were a lot of festive fall gourds at this event- I collaborated with her thoughtful, prettily dressed, and considerate employees, each offering every courtesy as I darted back and forth, bringing the themed tables to life: Lorelai, Emily, Fall in Connecticut, Rory’s Dorm, Vicious Trollop, and, of course, Stars Hollow.
The Event
Then, the guests spilled into the parlor, filing in with genuine expressions of excitement. Mothers, friends, daughters, and sisters surged forward, pouring into the space like lake waters released from a dam, joyfully rushing into the river as the flood gates open. I flushed with real pleasure, delighted to see how many guests had dressed as their favorite characters. There were three Lukes, an “injured” Sookie, a mother-daughter duo with matching roses in their lapels, a Rory in the now iconic white fisherman’s sweater, and even a fully decked-out Chilton student.
Each guest settled in and placed their order. Within minutes, towers of French pastries, fresh fruits, and delicate sandwiches paraded out of the kitchen, reminiscent of the scene in Beauty and the Beast where Belle is served an array of beautiful, inviting dishes—rare European delicacies expertly styled. Indeed, Fiona and her staff make it clear that they want you to be their guest.

Tea time, rooted in English tradition since the 19th century, originated as a way to bridge the long gap between lunch and dinner, evolving into a social ritual embraced by all classes. This daily pause became an opportunity not only to refresh with tea and light fare but also to gather and engage in meaningful conversation, reinforcing the art of hospitality. Over time, tea time has come to symbolize a uniquely English sense of civility, calm, and appreciation for life’s small, shared moments.
Then commenced the trivia, and the competition was fierce. I worried at times that my questions might be too challenging, but by the end, I saw several nearly-perfect scores. These ladies know Gilmore Girls as intimately as Marty knows the proper way to mix a margarita. Yet, despite the competitive approach, each group vigorously cheered the winner.
We then commenced to painting our pumpkins, and again I was pleasantly surprised by the genuine skill and ability of some of our artists, most distinct among them, a young talented crafter who incorporated daintily painted dragonflies into her design.

By the end of the afternoon, new friendships were forged and relationships deepened. I observed as individuals commented amongst themselves that the tea and treats were among the most exquisite they had tasted. Many guests provided effusive encouragement and expressed real joy as they filed out, promising to stay apprised of future events and tea parties.
Once the final guest departed, the staff and I worked together to clean and organize the room, chatting amiably about everything from Jane Austen and our mutual affection for antiquarian books to Fiona’s charming Corgi, Waffles, and the six wives of Henry VIII. I packed up the alien—a nod to Lane Kim’s band, Hep Alien—and my collection of decorative pumpkins before heading out. As I departed, I could almost swear I heard the faint, familiar tones of la-la-la-la lingering in the background.

Conclusion
In a world that often prioritizes speed and utility over beauty and grace, creating spaces dedicated to elegance, fresh experiences, and approachable refinement offers more than just a pleasant diversion—it provides a necessary respite. Such spaces encourage us to slow down, savor the moment, and immerse ourselves in an atmosphere where thoughtfulness and taste are paramount.
They serve as reminders that elegance need not be unattainable, but rather an accessible pleasure that uplifts our everyday lives. Whether through a well-curated tea room, a thoughtfully planned event, or a cozy bookstore, these spaces foster a sense of community and belonging. They invite us to engage in the timeless art of lingering, allowing us to connect more deeply with both our surroundings and each other.
