While recovering from an illness, I decided to binge-watch Netflix’s The Crown. Naturally, this influenced my Trader Joe’s grocery list and led to the reintroduction of charcuterie as a meal option for family dinners. Combining this newfound inspiration with my ready-to-reference, albeit mostly decorative, knowledge of European cooking, I have curated the perfect tea tray for nine North Georgia cities. Bon appétit!

Cornelia

In Cornelia, Georgia, the perfect tea tray combines the elegance of a quintessential United Kingdom tea with a distinctly Southern presentation. Influenced by local favorites FWS and FarmHouse PoundCakes, the tray offers a delightful mix of British and Scottish delicacies. From FWS, expect European offerings such as delicate Cornish pasties, buttery croissants, and perhaps some finely crafted danishes, adding a touch of subtle sweetness. Complementing these are FarmHouse PoundCakes’ authentic Scottish baked goods, including buttery shortbread, hearty scones with clotted cream and jam, and a comforting bowl of Scotch broth. For a savory touch, a selection of classic British tea sandwiches, cucumber, smoked salmon, and egg salad, round out the spread.

The tea is served in beautifully crafted Southern-style porcelain tea cups, adorned with delicate floral patterns. Linen napkins in soft, pastel shades add an elegant touch, while a polished wooden tray or a vintage silver platter brings a sense of tradition to the setting.

Helen

In Helen, Georgia, one must naturally expect a Bavarian tea. The perfect tea tray features an array of traditional German delicacies, starting with soft pretzels served with tangy mustard and mini bratwursts wrapped in flaky puff pastry. Complementing these savory treats are delicate slices of Black Forest cake and apple strudel, offering a sweet balance to the spread. Freshly baked German rye bread is accompanied by a selection of authentic German cheeses, such as Emmental, Limburger, and Allgäuer Bergkäse, as well as traditional cold cuts like Schinken (German ham), Leberwurst (liverwurst), and Blutwurst (blood sausage).

For an authentic experience, a selection of herbal teas, such as chamomile and peppermint, popular in Bavarian culture, pairs wonderfully with the assortment of foods.

Yet, often the dependence on the Alpine theme for Helen natives grows a little dull. Therefore, I suggest a presentation that reflects the year 1968, the landmark year when Helen was transformed into a Bavarian-inspired town. Honoring tradition, while providing the perfect opportunity to finally use the dishware purchased at that local antique store.

The tea tray and table setting evoke the Atomic Age, featuring vibrant and retro elements typical of an ordinary housewife’s look of the era. The tea is served in bright, mid-century modern ceramic tea cups, adorned with bold geometric patterns. Linen napkins in classic 1960s prints, such as polka dots and checks, add a nostalgic touch. The tea tray itself is a sleek, Formica-topped serving platter, reminiscent of the streamlined designs of the time. A small vase with colorful plastic flowers, popular in 1968 décor, completes the setting.

This blend of Bavarian flavors and mid-century modern presentation creates a unique and delightful tea party experience, celebrating both the cultural richness of Helen and the nostalgic charm of the 1960s.

Cumming: Honoring Eastern Indian Heritage and Contributions

In Cumming, Georgia, the perfect tea tray celebrates the rich cultural contributions of the burgeoning East Indian population, which has significantly bolstered the city’s economic and educational growth. This tea tray is a tribute to their heritage, featuring a delightful array of traditional Indian delicacies and authentic teas.

The tea tray includes an assortment of Indian snacks and sweets, beginning with samosas, crisp pastry pockets filled with spiced potatoes, peas, and sometimes meat, served with tangy tamarind chutney. Accompanying the samosas are pakoras, delicious vegetable fritters made from spinach, onion, and potato, dipped in gram flour batter and fried to golden perfection. To add a touch of sweetness, the tray features gulab jamun, soft, syrup-soaked doughnuts made from milk solids, and rasgulla, spongy cheese balls in a light syrup, both popular Indian desserts that offer a perfect balance to the savory snacks.

Complementing these delights is a selection of traditional Indian teas. Masala chai, a spiced tea brewed with black tea leaves, milk, and a blend of aromatic spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves, takes center stage. This robust and flavorful tea is the heart of Indian tea culture. For those preferring a lighter option, Darjeeling tea, known for its delicate flavor and floral aroma, is included, offering a refined tea experience.

Gainesville: Elegant and Sophisticated

Gainesville, Georgia, has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past decade, emerging with the sophistication and elegance of a debutante blossoming from humble origins. To reflect this Renaissance, the perfect tea tray for Gainesville should be elegant, tasteful, a little fun, and warm, akin to the charm of Princess Diana.

The tea tray features a mix of classic and contemporary delicacies, starting with cucumber sandwiches and smoked salmon canapés. These traditional British tea sandwiches are given a modern twist with a hint of dill cream cheese and a sprinkle of capers, adding a touch of sophistication and freshness. Accompanying these savory treats are mini quiches filled with spinach, mushroom, and gruyere, offering a warm, comforting bite that balances elegance with heartiness.

For a sweet touch, the tray includes scones with clotted cream and strawberry preserves, a quintessential element of any high tea, paired with lemon tarts and macarons in a variety of flavors. These delicate pastries add a fun and colorful element to the tray, reflecting the playful yet refined spirit of Gainesville.

Blue Ridge: A Taste of Mountain Elegance

In Blue Ridge, the ideal tea tray would feature Smoked Trout Pâté, served with dill and lemon crème fraîche on crisp, gourmet water crackers. To complement the trout, the tray would include two regional sides: a refreshing cucumber and tomato salad with fresh herbs,  and a serving of pickled okra, providing a delightful Southern twist.

We suggest pairing it with white tea. Specifically, delicate white tea, such as Silver Needle, which has subtle flavors that won’t overpower the trout but will still add a refined touch to the pairing. This combination offers a sophisticated and flavorful experience, perfect for savoring the scenic beauty of Blue Ridge.

Why trout? Every year this community celebrates the Blue Ridge Trout Festival. An event that brings together fishing enthusiasts, food lovers, and the local community to honor the region’s rich trout fishing heritage.

One of the festival’s highlights is the attention paid toward the culinary showcase, where local chefs and food vendors prepare mouthwatering trout dishes, allowing visitors to experience the best of Southern cuisine. The pairings are a nod to the region’s well-preserved and appreciated culinary offerings, reflective of its relatively isolated and deeply rural character near the Tennessee border.

Ellijay: Apple-Oriented Delight

Ellijay, nestled in the heart of the Southern Appalachian region, is renowned for its bountiful apple orchards and rich Appalachian heritage. The perfect tea tray for Ellijay celebrates these local treasures, combining traditional Southern flavors with a warm and inviting presentation that reflects the area’s charm.

The tea tray prominently features apple-themed delicacies, beginning with apple scones served with a dollop of homemade apple butter and clotted cream. These scones offer a delightful blend of sweetness and spice, embodying the essence of Ellijay’s famous apple harvest. Accompanying the scones are apple and cheddar biscuits, a savory treat that pairs the sharpness of cheddar with the sweetness of local apples, creating a harmonious balance of flavors.

For a touch of Southern warmth, the tray includes miniature pecan pies and buttermilk cornbread muffins drizzled with honey. These classic Southern treats add a comforting, homey feel to the tea experience. To round out the selection, apple cider doughnuts provide a sweet and slightly tart finish, perfect for pairing with a variety of teas.

The tea selection features Southern sweet tea and apple spice tea. Southern sweet tea, with its refreshing and slightly sugary taste, is a staple of Southern hospitality, while apple spice tea, infused with cinnamon and cloves, complements the apple-themed delicacies and adds a warm, aromatic note to the tray. Our suggestion, visit R&A Orchards for the freshest selection of apples.

The presentation of the tea tray should reflect the good old Southern Appalachian spirit of the area. I suggest serving the tea in Mason jars, adorned with twine and small tags indicating the type of tea. The tray itself should be a rustic wooden board, with linen napkins in gingham patterns, reminiscent of traditional Southern picnics, neatly folded alongside. To complete the presentation, a small basket of freshly picked apples and white baby’s breath.

Blairsville: Simple and Authentic

Blairsville, a pretty and simple town in Georgia, is known for its authentic charm, scenic views, and warm, welcoming people. The perfect tea tray captures this essence with classic Southern treats like buttermilk biscuits served with peach preserves and clotted cream, and miniature pound cakes. These delights offer a comforting start, reflecting Blairsville’s traditional cuisine.

For added local flavor, the tray includes pecan tarts and blueberry muffins, highlighting the region’s fresh produce and baking traditions. The tea selection is straightforward yet refined, featuring classic black tea and refreshing Southern sweet tea, embodying the town’s warm hospitality.

The presentation is elegant in its simplicity, with tea served in delicate white porcelain cups on a simple wooden tray. Linen napkins in neutral tones and a small vase of fresh wildflowers complete the setting, perfectly capturing the rustic charm and natural beauty of Blairsville. This tea tray offers a delightful and authentic culinary experience, reflecting the town’s unique character.

Dahlonega: Cottage Core Charm

Dahlonega, with its charming cottages and picturesque landscapes, is the ideal setting for a cottage core tea party. The tea tray features rustic yet elegant treats like lavender shortbread cookies, lemon thyme scones served with clotted cream and homemade raspberry jam, and miniature apple tarts made with locally sourced apples. These baked goods offer a delicate balance of floral, citrus, and sweet flavors, capturing the essence of a cozy countryside cottage.

The tea selection includes soothing herbal blends like chamomile and mint, as well as a light Earl Grey. These teas are perfect for a relaxing afternoon, with chamomile and mint providing aromatic comfort and Earl Grey adding a touch of sophistication with its subtle bergamot flavor.

The presentation reflects the cottage core aesthetic, with tea served in vintage floral china, adding a whimsical touch. The tray, either a rustic wooden board or an antique silver platter, enhances the nostalgic feel. Linen napkins with lace edges and small bouquets of colorful wildflowers complete the look, bringing a touch of nature to the table. This tea tray creates a magical and serene atmosphere, perfect for enjoying the simple pleasures of a cottage-core tea party in Dahlonega.

Clermont: Elegance in Dairy-Inspired Delights

In Clermont, Georgia, close to the renowned Mountain Fresh Creamery, the perfect tea tray embraces dairy-based delicacies with a touch of elegance. This tea tray features a selection of refined treats, starting with cream-filled éclairs and buttery palmier, offering a rich and luxurious taste experience. Additionally, macaroons and petit fours with delicate cream fillings provide a delightful sweetness that complements the other pastries.

The tea selection includes a smooth vanilla-infused black tea and a light jasmine green tea. The vanilla black tea pairs wonderfully with the creamy desserts, enhancing their rich flavors, while the jasmine green tea offers a refreshing and aromatic contrast.

For presentation, the tea is served in elegant porcelain cups with intricate designs, adding a touch of sophistication. As for the tray, I encourage a polished silver platter, enhancing the refined ambiance. Linen napkins in soft pastel colors and a small vase of fresh peonies complete the look, creating an inviting and luxurious tea experience.

Conclusion

No matter the city or style, tea is a ritual to be savored, cherished, and commemorated.
