In a sun-dappled gully at Cornelia City Park, the Dogs of Summer gathered to compete for glory, honor, and a card-stock certificate celebrating their panache, presence, and, as the kids say, that skibidy rizz. This event, serving as an adoption fair, pet pageant, and fundraiser for Habersham County Animal Care and Control, showcased the best and brightest of both the canine and human variety. The Dogs of Summer proved to be the best doggone day on the calendar, bringing the community together in celebration and support of our furry friends.

The pet pageant was fiercely competitive, with categories like Most Dapper, Swimsuit, Ugliest Dog, Most Talented, and Most Patriotic. Each category showcased the unique charm and talents of the participating dogs, making it a high-stakes event that kept the audience on the edge of their seats.
Our esteemed judges brought a wealth of knowledge and passion for animals to the table. Leonor Camejo, a Forsyth-based pharmacist, with a deep love for all things fuzzy, fluffy, and faithful maintained high standards when appraising our four-legged friends. Peyton LeeAnn, a dedicated volunteer at Habersham County Animal Care and Control, arrived fresh from rescuing two abandoned hamsters the day before, underscoring her commitment to animal welfare. Indeed, when asked about the contestants, Peyton stated, “Oh man, there was some pretty stiff competition! A lot of dogs brought their A-Game. Every single dog that entered was so happy, friendly and just thrilled to be there. You can tell we have some wonderful fur babies and fur-parents in our community! Also shout out to Bindi and her new family, who got adopted and went to her forever home!”

The headline category, Most Patriotic, saw Bear, a feisty Chihuahua in a headdress, take home the top prize with a performance that left everyone in both awe and awwwwww. Vago, a fine example of dog-flesh, who puts the MASS in Mastiff, charmed host Carly, Senior Editor of the Cute North Georgian Magazine, with his larger-than-life presence, earning him the Host’s Choice award. In the playful Ugliest Dog category, Charlie McCurry, the host’s family dog, took the prize. In a moment of playful vengeance, Charlie tripped his dad, Tom McCurry, as he mounted the stage, much to the crowd’s amusement.
A girl in pearls, Farrah Pawsette stole the show in the Most Talented category with the style of Gloria Vanderbilt, the grace of Kate Middleton, and the talent and presence of Taylor Swift. She rocked and rolled her way to victory in the talent show. Then, Chanel lived up to her name, dazzling the audience with a series of jaunty hats, and took home the Most Dapper award with what she projected as ease. In perhaps the most anticipated category, Swimsuit, Winnie took home the prize in an outfit that would inspire envy in the cast of Bay Watch.
We even enjoyed the presence of a local dog celebrity, Maggie Mae the Poodle.
Madi Nix, the Executive Director of the Habersham Animal Shelter, brought along adoptable pups and gift bags for all the pageant participants. With the help of about 20 committed volunteers, the event ran smoothly and successfully. One of the most heartwarming moments of the day was the adoption of Bindi, a pit mix who had been a long-time resident at the shelter. This successful adoption, among others, highlighted the event’s true purpose—finding loving homes for the animals of Habersham County.

The event was further enriched by the presence of local vendors, including Save the Floofers, BSG Coffee, Gabby’s Bakery, Blue Weim Designs, and Habersham County Animal Care and Control. Their support and participation caffeinated and nourished our guests and supplied plenty of treats, toys, collars, dog wine and beer, and last-minute costume items for the dogs of summer.

The Dogs of Summer event showcased the incredible love and support the people of Habersham County have for their animals. It was a day filled with joy, laughter, and a shared commitment to animal welfare. Here’s to many more events like this, where the community comes together to celebrate and support the wonderful animals of Habersham County.
