Dear Annabelle,

I’m facing a recurring issue with my girlfriend forgetting her keys. She works nights and often misplaces or forgets her keys. Despite suggesting solutions like setting alarms on her phone and reminding her before she leaves, she still forgets them at least three out of five nights per week. As I have a demanding job in in the medical field and need my sleep, this situation is becoming increasingly challenging.

In order to teach her a lesson, I wouldn’t unlock the door until I left for work the next day. I placed a blanket and pillow in her car before she left for work and the weather is nice. She rang the doorbell and knocked incessantly, so I let her in. When I explained my rational, she blew up at me. Since then, she is sleeping on the couch and not talking to me. I think she’s being irrational and refusing to see things from my perspective. What do you think?

Sincerely, Sleepy in Cumming

Dear Sleepy,

It’s understandable that you’re feeling frustrated by your girlfriend’s forgetfulness, especially given the demanding nature of your job and the importance of getting enough rest. However, it’s crucial to address the situation in a constructive and respectful manner. Too that end, I would strongly urge beginning your next conversation with an apology.

Using tactics like not unlocking the door and leaving her to sleep in her car as a way to “teach her a lesson” will not be an effective approach and can ultimately strain your relationship. Communication and understanding are key in resolving conflicts like these.

Instead of resorting to punitive measures, I recommend purchasing a key pad, which has her own code to enter. This way, no key is required.

Best,

Annabelle
