I found love in my senior year of college, we met at a local café off Bryant Drive near my University. A relationship more potent, more meaningful, and certainly more long lasting than any prior. As a University of Alabama student, I found myself frequenting that local café more often than my own dorm room, all thanks to an introduction with a tall Columbian cup of coffee. It started innocently enough, but before I knew it, I was in deep – dare I say, could it be love?

Yet, upon graduation, I returned to my home in Habersham County only to discover that my beloved caffeine fix wasn’t as readily available as before. It was like coming down from a caffeine high straight into a decaf depression circa 1930.

Admittedly, coffee shops dotted my community, but my goal upon returning home was to refuse to settle for the mundane. When I venture beyond the more conveniently located corporate chains and their drive thru, I crave the full coffee house experience. That entails finding the trifecta: a cozy interior with plush seating, a delicate balance between soft lamp glow and natural sunlight, and, of course, the brew that whispers sweet nothings to my taste buds. In short, I’m seeking seduction.

Perched on the fringes of Piedmont University lies the Henry Cavill of coffee shops, exuding charm and timeless appeal capturing the attention of those who drive past.

This small town of Demorest managed what all of Tuscaloosa could not–a genuine, honest to goodness coffee lounge.  A cozy spot offering not just warm beverages and crumbly pastries, but also the promise of comfortable, even pleasant surroundings. Coffee envy is real, and I experience it every time I think about how lucky Piedmont students are to enjoy this venue.

Farmhouse Coffee traces its humble origins back to Cleveland, Georgia. Since then, it has branched out, extending its roots into Demorest and Gainesville.

Comforting Atmosphere

Post 2020, we all know what it’s like to approach a counter and order a beverage from a reluctant, even hostile employee. Entering a building and feeling unwelcome is a sentiment no one desires and even dreads. Thankfully, Farmhouse Coffee prioritizes their employees’ contentment, thus preserving the customer-associate relationship. Hence, the barista behind the counter radiated warmth and hospitality from the moment I stepped inside. I vividly recall the warm hello as I stepped inside, a mellow sunlight following me like a faithful companion as a consequence of the floor length windows.

Soft jazz music played, and I felt as easy as Sunday morning as I ordered my white chocolate latte. A new flirtation commences, enticing me to stay a while longer. I settle into a cozy corner, tucked away in a room just off the main area and settle on a cushioned bench. I open my laptop, close my eyes, and kiss the lip of the cup. I’m normally not that kind of girl, but I was swept away.

Fresh & Local

Farmhouse Coffee prides itself on its commitment to local sourcing, crafting baked goods in-house and procuring them from nearby providers. Their menu exclusively showcases home-cooked, made-from-scratch Georgia meals. The piping hot ham and cheese croissant I ate was a perfect remedy for an empty stomach. The manager of the establishment, kind enough to accept a few questions for this article,  informed me that the dairy products were provided by Mountain Fresh Creamery, a local dairy farm stationed in Cleveland.

In North Georgia, Farmhouse Coffee’s commitment to supporting local communities is widely recognized and appreciated. The emphasis on backing small production facilities reflects a broader sentiment among Georgians, who understand the challenges faced by family farms lacking external revenue streams and tourist services. In an environment where the majority of family-owned farms operate at a financial deficit, the significance of community support cannot be overstated. Despite the region’s ongoing urbanization and evolving culinary preferences, there remains a deep-seated pride in the agricultural heritage of Georgia, prompting a continued emphasis on sourcing products locally.

Farmhouse Coffee actively contributes to the local community in various ways. The Demorest location offers an additional space that locals can rent for events, providing a valuable resource for gatherings. Additionally, the Farmhouse in Gainesville supports Thrive, a business offering rentable and quiet office spaces for those in need of workspace solutions. To further promote this partnership, Farmhouse Coffee brews a specialty coffee exclusively available at Thrive, encouraging the local community to invest in the facility’s offerings. These examples highlight their commitment to enhancing the communities they serve, demonstrating its dedication to giving back to its hometowns.

Friendship & Comradery

Sometimes, friends inadvertently drift apart as life’s responsibilities demand constant attention, leading to lost contact and months passing between conversations. Finding a place to reunite after such a long absence holds immeasurable meaning.

During our conversation, the manager explained how the Farmhouse in Demorest serves as a watering hole for students and locals. Observing firsthand, the facility exceeded these expectations. Students entered together, their faces lit up with delight to greet one another post Spanish final. They engaged in familiar conversations with the baristas, who chatted like old friends catching up. The  air buzzed with lively chatter. Farmhouse Coffee provides college students with a meeting ground to unwind between exams and find solace in the company of friends.

Moreover, it nurtures friendships within the community. The manager described how the establishment doesn’t seek to eliminate competing businesses but rather embraces them as allies with shared objectives. Success for Farmhouse Coffee isn’t about surpassing others but about reaching the finish line together. This attention and care foster prosperity for many, achieved through collaborative efforts.

Conclusion

Although I hadn’t initially planned to form a relationship so soon upon returning to my home town, I know that this connection with Farmhouse Coffee is meant to last. This unexpected bond has been forged through their warm hospitality, delicious coffee, and genuine commitment to the local community. Turns out my committed gentleman caller is not a well-roasted Colombian, but a good ole Georgia boy, homegrown in White County Georgia.
