In the halcyon days of youth, my sister and I wandered through the woods searching the shaded creeks for fairies, even as we maintained a focused vigilance against monsters. In our heads we knew that these magical beings belonged in the painted pages of story books, yet we just knew in our hearts that the tracks in the mud belonged to a unicorn. Reflecting on it now, I recognize the authentic beauty of Northeast Georgia’s natural wilderness, characterized by red clay against verdant hills and gracefully arching branches which stretch over meandering streams.
I cherish fond memories of weaving through the pines and oaks and listening to the chirp of Northern Cardinals against a background of looing Mourning Doves. I close my eyes and remember the crunch of leaves beneath my feet and the sensorial experience of a biting breeze while gazing at the blue-tinged mountains in the distance.
Having grown accustomed to such breathtaking views, flatland areas no longer hold the same allure for me. Both my parents, avid nature enthusiasts, instilled in my sister and me a love for the great outdoors by taking us hiking on the local trails. Over the years, I’ve come to truly appreciate these places. While they may not be particularly challenging, they offer a welcoming environment for those seeking a leisurely walk amidst nature’s wonders. If you’re looking to enjoy a relaxed stroll through the woods on a beautiful day, here are some trails I recommend trying out.
Trahlyta Lake Trail
During my dad’s birthday celebration, I had the pleasure of embarking on this delightful walk for the first time. We set out early in the day, the weather as crisp and sweet as a Red Delicious. Choosing a secluded location, we savored every moment of this father-daughter excursion, taking time to explore the hidden hollows of the region we love. The trail, a scenic and convenient loop around Lake Trahlyta, brings us back to our starting point after about an hour-long stroll. Spanning approximately a mile, the trail includes a concrete footpath which spans the width of a man-made dam.
Following recent rainfall, the trail was a bit muddy, allowing me to master the art of hopping on one foot, while gingerly navigating the black silt ready to steal the sandals of hikers unwary enough to avoid its trap. For those averse to mud, I advise monitoring the forecast for rain, but if not, I encourage embracing one’s inner child and going for it! Despite the muddy patches, the experience presents one of those rare family moments that stand out as hallmarks in the lexicon of our memories.
Yet, the best aspect of Lake Trahlyta are the placid waters, which resemble a shimmering sheet of glass, perfectly mirroring the tranquil beauty of its surroundings. The still waters, undisturbed by even the faintest ripple, evoke a sense of profound calmness, inviting contemplation and reflection. Nested in a hollowed-out bank of protruding roots, one can cast a line, read a book, or debate the merits of freewill over determinism. Truly, an ideal choice for anyone seeking a serene lakeside view.
Unicoi State Park
Noticing a bit of a trend here, huh? What can I say, I have a deep love for tranquil lakes. Out of all the trails I’ve walked, I’ve revisited this one the most. I pass by this lake often on my way to work. Afterall, when decompressing after a stressful day, what better remedy than to lounge in the grass and watch as the fading sunset casts crimson fingers of light across the surface of the water.
In the summertime, watch toddlers splash in water-wings or teenagers as they paddle board across its surface. If you’re seeking a nature-filled escape during a relaxed walk, this trail, which encompasses Lake Unicoi, is an ideal choice. As one wanders, they may be delighted to witness fish swimming close to the water’s edge. It’s also a fantastic opportunity for families with children, who can eagerly cup their hands in the water, attempting to lure minnows into small clutches. Then, hunt for unsuspecting turtles to name and cosset and photograph, while leaving the little guy to rest in the green thicket where found.
The Unicoi Lake trail also features a serene beach area, ideal for sunbathing, swimming, and spreading out a cozy checkered blanket. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a Pinterest-worthy picnic, complete with porcelain dishes, baskets of bread, cheese, jam, and strawberries, adorned with a small vase of Queen Anne’s Lace or butter yellow tulips for a touch of elegance. Additionally, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can try your hand at fishing and cook your catch over one of the on-location grills, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Just don’t forget the hot sauce! If it rains, take refuge at one of the nearby shelters or rest in your tent or RV if camping. Truly, this place is a one stop shop for summer fun.
Anna-Ruby Falls
This trail holds a special kind of magic for me. It’s perfect for those seeking a leisurely stroll, as it’s under a mile long. However, it’s worth noting that this trail is more inclined than others, so be prepared for a bit of an uphill battle. But trust me, it’s worth every step and it’s a far cry from the beaches of Normandy on D-Day.
Indeed, walking along this trail feels like stepping into a fairytale. There’s a charming section where you cross a small river, flanked by large stones rising from the water on either side. And when you reach the falls at the end, it’s truly a breathtaking sight. The trail is paved, making it easier to navigate than a few of the others, especially for those that require walking assistance.
During the bustling summer months, you might even encounter visitors from around the world, as it’s a popular destination for tourists staying in Helen. I remember meeting a delightful group from Britain on my last visit. However, if you prefer peace and quiet, I recommend visiting during the off-season. With greater seclusion, you can fully immerse yourself in the tranquility of the woods and the gentle flow of the water. Along the way, you’ll find resting spots, and the falls themselves offer a viewing area where you can sit and soak in the view to your heart’s content. Trust me, it’s an experience worth every moment.
