Like the tale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the Big Red Apple 5K has tested its timing and found the version that feels “just right.” The first run, held on Easter weekend, proved too cold. Last year, organizers shifted it to the fall and tied it to Cornelia’s Big Red Apple Festival. The change drew more runners, more energy, and the beginnings of a tradition.

First Baptist Church of Cornelia, a historic congregation serving the community for more than 130 years, stands as both a spiritual home and the starting point of the annual Big Red Apple 5K.

The race begins in the City of Cornelia at First Baptist Church of Cornelia, a historic congregation that has ministered to the community for more than 130 years. The church’s mission is to nurture healthy, vibrant, life-giving connections with God and with neighbors, guided by the belief that life is meant to be lived in fellowship with both. That vision finds a natural expression in the church’s annual 5K, which brings people together in movement, celebration, and community spirit.

Dr. Nathan LaShoto and his wife, Kristen LaShoto, lead the event. Kristen, an ESOL elementary teacher, channels her energy into local projects—whether judging the Dogs of Summer Pet Pageant for the Habersham County Animal Care and Control or welcoming newcomers at church.  Becky Hughes, Communications Ministry Assistant, also helps organize,  giving the leadership team a balance that’s neither too much nor too little, but well-suited to the task.

Runners take off from the starting line in downtown Cornelia during the Big Red Apple 5K, an annual race hosted by First Baptist Church of Cornelia and tied to the city’s fall festival.

Race Day

On Saturday, September 20th, runners will line up at First Baptist of Cornelia.

Check-in for same-day registration and packet pick-up starts at 7:45 a.m. A 1-mile fun run begins at 8:30 a.m., circling the church property four times.

At 8:45 a.m., participants warm up with a Jazzercise routine before the 5K begins at 9 a.m.. The course winds through Cornelia City Park, resplendent in autumn leaves, past lamp posts reminiscent of The Chronicles of Narnia, over wooden bridges that arch across quiet streams, and alongside the city’s historic train tracks.

Registration

Linked HERE is the registration form.

  • 5K: $35 through August; $37.50 in September; $40 on race day
  • 1-Mile Fun Run: $20 flat fee

All participants will receive a t-shirt and medal. Those who register before September 6th can guarantee their shirt size, but extras will be available.

More Than a Race

The morning will feature more than competition. Coffee, the Chick-fil-A Cow, music by DJ John Krippner, and a photo booth will create a festive atmosphere. Bananas, apples, and snacks will be on hand for runners. Prizes will go to the top three male and female finishers overall and to age group winners.

The 5K has earned wide support from local sponsors, including Aspire Pediatric Therapy, Family Resource Center, Ferdos Family Dental, Kleinert Eye Care, North Georgia Tech, Third Space Fitness, Traditions Bank, Capital Roofing, LLC, Kiwanis Club, Whitfield Funeral Home, 99.3 WCON, Chick-fil-A, Jazzercise, The Cute North Georgian Magazine, and Agave Rentals.

Looking Forward

Organizers hope that in 2026 the City of Cornelia will formally incorporate the 5K into the Big Red Apple Festival, securing its place as a civic mainstay.
